How To: Be a Man

We follow Kyle: a good, honest boy, as he learns life's most valuable lesson: How To Be A Man…

How To: Be a Man (2018) is a surrealist take on classic 1950’s social how-to videos, following a young boy named Kyle as he learns what it means to be a man. However, the film’s mysterious narrator begins to push things further and further, showing the darker side of Kyle’s newfound masculinity.

Shot on black and white 16mm film, How To: Be a Man was produced at an Emerson College summer filmmaking program I attended in 2018. The film took 2nd place at the WHYY Youth Media Awards and received the award for Outstanding Live Action Film at the MetroWest Film Festival, in addition to screening at the Minneapolis International Film Festival, the All-American High School Film Festival, and Blow-up International Art House Film Fest.
